這次的企劃會有一點點不一樣，融合一點大家說英語的雜誌風

以前我做翻譯的時候很多人希望我教英文(?)，但實在不知道該從何教起，翻譯搞笑影片說實話能學到的東西也不三不四的，這次腦袋熱熱的居然翻譯了上週今夜，而且還不要命地上了全英文字幕，所以就藉著這個影片的內容來跟大家講我在翻譯的時候注意到哪些很特別的用法和單字，是可以學習的吧！

（順帶一題，文中的例句都是偷康橋字典的例句，我好懶得想）

Our main story tonight concerns electricity. It’s like Oscar Isaac, and without its involvement, nothing in my house gets turned on.

這裡是雙關語，turn on可以當作打開電源或電器的開關，在英文俚語中turn somebody on也有「讓某人慾火焚身」的意思。

Short men really turn me on.
矮個子男人能讓我變得興奮。

Electricity is such an integral part of modern life. It is hard to believe that we used to have to sell people on the idea of electric appliances with ads like this.

integral (adj.) 構成不可或缺的

He's an integral part of the team and we can't do without him.
他是球隊不可或缺的一員，沒有他我們可不行。

Yes! The pride and joy of the men of the house is of course the temperature control system. Just invite all your thermo-bros over on the Sunday, crack out the few brews, and watch the temperature for hours. Sorry, ladies. You wouldn’t understand. It’s a guy thing.

crack out a brew (phr.) 打開啤酒

其實brew本身是釀造的意思，但也有啤酒的意思，而crack本身的意思是使東西有裂縫，拉開易開罐的動作就正好是讓瓶口產生裂縫囉
除此之外，crack也可以形容東西破裂的咖咖聲，作為狀聲詞使用

He's always cracking his knuckles.
他總是把自己的手指關節弄得劈啪作響。

 The system of generators that produce electricity, and the vast latticework of wires that get into our homes.

latticework (n.) 格子形狀的框架

一般是用來形容窗戶，例如公寓常會出現的那種鐵窗，但這裡用來代稱電網複雜的網絡

And the power grid failed yesterday when hurricane Ida ravage parts of Louisiana.

ravage (v.) 肆虐

The area has been ravaged by drought.

這一地區飽受乾旱的蹂躪。

You’ll either got a power grid deeply in need of repair, or the murder victim is come[coming] back as a ghost and is seeking revenge.

這裡應該是因為口語講太快造成的文法錯誤，be動詞後面應該是接coming，簡單糾正一下

If it feels like there’ve been more outages than usual recently, that’s because there have.

outages (n.) 停電

The radio news reported power outages affecting 50 homes.
廣播新聞報導說停電影響到50戶家庭。

停電相關的單字和用法有兩個，blackout 通常用在整座城市或大區域都停電的情況，經常是連街上的路燈都無法運作；outrage 則通常用在小範圍的停電，甚至是只有一戶的跳電都可以使用。這裡會使用outrage是因為John指涉的是所有大大小小的停電，所以用outrage這個字會比較保險，可以涵蓋的範圍比較廣

But it’s not just inconvenience. Losing electricity wreaks havoc on everything.

wreaks havoc (phr.) 造成損害

很常搭在一起使用的兩個字。wreak一字為引起，但是後面通常都是接負面的東西，例如 wreak chaos 造成混亂、wreak vengeance 復仇等等

The recent storms have wreaked havoc on crops.
最近的暴風雨給農作物造成了巨大災害。

This isn’t like I’m gonna lose a casserole in my fridge. Yo, this is I may not be alive tomorrow.

casserole (n.) 法式砂鍋

我是不知道這道菜普遍的譯名是什麼，所以維基百科叫它法式砂鍋就這樣吧XD......

主要就是肉跟蔬菜燉煮或焗烤後的大鍋菜，至於是不是真的很難吃我再問問我的法國人朋友......（X

But to have a casserole leftover, that is abandoned food that didn’t make the cut two rounds in a row.

make the cut (phr.) 符合目標或期望、成功

Out of a pool of twenty applicants, only 3 made the cut.
在二十位申請人中，只有三名成功入選。

And it all started in 1882, right here in New York, when Thomas Edison unveiled the country’s first central power station on Pearl Street.

unveil (v.) 揭幕、首次推出

The company recently unveiled a test version of its new search engine.
這家公司最近公佈了新搜尋引擎的測試版。

veil就是面紗，加上一個字首un代表反義。取下面紗就是揭幕的意思啦，真棒一次背兩個單字英文真簡單！

Something all the more remarkable, given Tesla’s, let’s say, eccentricities.

eccentricity (n.) 古怪（的行徑）

Her eccentricities get stranger by the day.
她的那些古怪行為日益變本加厲。

這個字的形容詞eccentric個人覺得比較常用，程度比strange或weird還要更古怪，但通常帶點好笑可愛的怪

Tesla suffered from bizarre compulsions. Like his consuming need to rescue injured pigeons and nurse them back to health.

compulsion (n.) 強烈慾望、強迫症

I seem to have a constant compulsion to eat.
我好像總有想吃東西的慾望。

英文老師都會說介係詞要一起記，所以一起幫你標紅色了喔！

常見的用法suffer from + 某種負面的東西，也不一定要是疾病，也可以是suffer from floods 因水災受苦等等

If Tesla were alive today, I genuinely wonder which will upset him more: the fact of his name is being co-opted by history first edgelord billionaire, or the fact that modern pigeons have just gotten so unfuckable.

edgelord (n.) 喜歡在網路上煽動情緒的人 (俗語)

這個字有點難翻譯，我翻成酸民其實意思也不太到位。這個字應該是源自edgy，在字典裡是緊張的意思，在網路上變成形容那種叛逆、覺得自己很酷的青少年，簡單來講就是有點8+9或國中瞎妹的感覺，可能會自拍照然後寫「愛腫麼還不回來」（好糟糕的比喻）

這種青少年會覺得自己很酷，在網路上到處嘴人。而lord就是領主，所以這種叛逆青少年的領主就是煽動情緒的人，不知道這樣大家有懂嗎XDDD

然後Elon Musk就是前幾個禮拜在推特發七步詩的那位先生，他這幾天又幹了一件大事。美國門柱級參議員Bernie Sanders在推特發了文表示應該要讓富人課更多稅，身為美國前幾名首富的馬斯克直接留言回嗆「我都忘記你還活著了」，還再發文說「Bernie，想要我多出手一些股票是嗎？」，這句話很有可能會影響到目前的股市

這種直接嗆參議員的行為，可以理解成例如郭台銘直接在FB發文嗆立委怎麼還沒死。好，那麼這樣大家理解edgelord的定義了嗎（X

wind up (phr.) 以...作結

If he keeps doing stuff like that he's going to wind up in prison!
如果他這麼做下去，最終會進監獄的！

Let me just quickly say it here, kudos slugs.

kudos (n.) 榮耀

不過這個用法比較跟榮耀無關，比較像是在稱讚說厲害喔、不錯喔、稱讚你，偏比較口語的說法。啊記住一定要用複數喔！

Kudos to everyone who put the event together.

稱讚所有扮成這個活動的人。

I hope no one standing there was hurt. But honestly, even if someone was, it wouldn’t be a deal breaker for me.

這裡有點難理解，break a deal字面上的意思就是毀約，但這裡比較像是「毀掉我的興致」或是「毀掉讓我覺得很讚這件事」

And if you think, well okay, let’s upgrade it then. You’re absolutely right. But that is also a massive undertaking.  

undertaking (n.) 工程

The construction of the tunnel is a large and complex undertaking.
該隧道的修建是項複雜的大工程。

The small ones, we don’t have time to get into tonight, like investing in microgrids, and weatherproofing.

什麼什麼proof家族，通常就是說能從某種東西中受到保護、防某種東西。有許多延伸詞，常見的有：

waterproof (adj.) 防水
fireproof (adj.) 防火
bulletproof (adj.) 防彈 (bulletproof vest 防彈背心)
windproof (adj.) 防風 (windproof jacket 防風外套)
soundproof (adj.) 隔音良好、消音

Right. And you probably don’t even need me to tell you why is this going to be an uphill battle

uphill 直譯就是上坡，上坡會很累很難，所以是很艱辛的（好爛的解釋）

It'll be an uphill battle to get the new proposals accepted.
要讓新的提案獲得通過會很困難。

And then I look at the town that they’re by and just think of what people have that they wouldn't have had. A lot of infrastructures, police cars, those kind of things.

infrastructures (n.) 基礎設施

The war has badly damaged the country's infrastructure.
戰爭嚴重破壞了該國的基礎建設。

infra- 這個字首有...之下的意思，在所有構造(structure)之下的就是基礎的建設囉，用字首輕鬆學英文（突然阿滴化

For instance, in Vermont, they had to put a moratorium on new solar and wind projects, because the transmission lines couldn’t carry any more electricity.

moratorium (n.) 終止

這個字最初用在核試驗，現在都用在發電、債務這種大型計畫的中止上，是很大的字(?)

In 2000, Illinois declared a moratorium on executions after 13 death-row inmates were exonerated.
在2000年，伊利諾州因13名死刑犯被證明無罪後，停止了處刑。

I understand everybody needs electric, and everybody has to have electric.

這裡會特別提示因為其實正式的說應該要用electricity這個字來代表電力，electric是形容詞「電力的」，然而在口語上其實可以用electric來當作名詞使用

BTW，最近剛好在研究美國各地的口音差異，所以講錯了請不要怪我XD，我覺得這個男子的口音很像費城口音(Philly Accent)，如果習慣聽標準腔英文的人可能會覺得他的口音怎麼跟課本CD的不一樣

對，美國國內就有非常多口音，而且很多都跟標準口音差非常多，到母語人士都聽不懂的程度（尤其是中西部口音），我覺得很有趣。所以台灣人不要再糾結自己的台灣口音了啦，要求標準美式口音根本就不切實際XD，能講的流暢跟讓人理解才是重要的
